We have some exciting news to share!
Subscription models are commonplace in the software market, and as of this morning, Safe Software launched a similar offering for FME.
The subscription model won’t replace the availability of perpetual licences, or the existing Enterprise Licensing Agreements (ELAs) already popular among users.
Instead it will represent a separate enterprise offering that gives you more flexibility in the deployment of the tool.
What is it?
The Enterprise Subscription Model (ESM) charges you a set annual fee, for which you get a greatly increased amount of licences. This limit will be based on your expected usage of FME in the first year.
You then have the freedom to increase and alter your licence holding to suit your requirements, as your needs change. If you exceed the licence value limit, you agree to move up to the appropriate price tier the following year. You can even exceed your usage limit in the same year by moving up to the next price tier.
Why consider the Enterprise Subscription Model (ESM)?
The main appeal of the ESM model has got to be the tiered pricing structure. For example:

From the obvious gap between the annual amount billable and maximum threshold value here, the potential cost-savings that this model could offer are clear. Organisations could save around 35% compared with purchasing and paying annual maintenance fees on FME licences individually throughout the year.
The model is perfect for customers who need flexibility and freedom to expand or adjust the make-up of their licence holding to fulfill their ever-changing needs. The financial value and benefit of customer autonomy is there for all to see, but what about its’ other advantages?
Unlike the traditional Enterprise Licence Agreement (ELA) model which is based on a 3 year obligation, the ESM is annually reviewed and paid-for, which means that the best deal for your organisations usage is calculated at the end of each 12 month subscription term.
Under this model, licences would be requested and promptly deployed whenever they are required. No need to spend precious time re-procuring for additional licences.
It’s easier to understand and more transparent, with the prices being standardised by Safe Software and the tiers explained before purchase in collaboration between supplier and customer.
A look to the future

There is also talk of a new population-based pricing for local government users, but we won’t have any news on that until 2019.
