The Coolest Projects we’ve Completed in 2018

2018 marked our 20th year of partnership with Safe Software, creators of FME. Over the past 12 months, we’ve delivered multiple valuable FME projects.

We’ve asked our consultants for their best project picks. In no particular order, here they are:

  1. A-One+ enjoys a 75% reduction in human hours

A-one+ were looking for a way to organise and improve their existing records. They also wanted to automate data processes to improve efficiency and the reliability of their data.

Thanks to miso’s solution, the quality and reliability of A-One+’s asset data has been dramatically improved.

The client is now easily able to identify road assets belonging to them, something which was proving difficult beforehand. Automation has removed the need for manual data collation and paper records. This has had the direct impact of freeing up staff time and lowering operational costs.

  1. Bibby HydroMap slashes time spent on data preparation with single automated process

Previously, it would take two members of staff over 14 weeks a year to process an average of 1.5 terabytes of data for each project. The manual hand-cranking involved and use of multiple software tools was causing costly project delays.

We developed a bespoke solution and delivered it to the client. Our solution replaced time-consuming data preparation with a single, integrated workflow. As a result, a task which previously took Bibby 14 days to complete, now takes just 24 hours!

The time saved on their data preparation has saved Bibby HydroMap an amazing £20,000 per dataset!

  1. Warwickshire County Council benefit from OpenSource

Our innovative solution will enable the council to produce a comprehensive travel-time matrix, using API feeds of open data.

The solution allows the council to accurately model their entire road infrastructure, taking into account variables such as traffic impact etc.

The project is currently in its final stages and involves Vectos MicroSIM as a consultancy partner.

  1. Costain cuts key process time with the help of miso

Costain needed to generate x and y coordinates of assets, and measure distances between assets and chart section start points. Data was previously taken directly from CAD drawings. As a result, users had to locate and copy each assets’ coordinates, before entering them into a spreadsheet.

Miso delivered an FME-based solution that reduced the time and effort needed to complete key data processes. As a result, Costain now plan to use the solution in upcoming major road schemes.

  1. East Staffordshire Borough Council update planning data

Planning data held by East Staffordshire Borough Council was recorded prior to Ordnance Survey improving MasterMap location accuracy throughout the 2000s.

Updating all of their records would be labour-intensive and risk human error affecting quality. Miso used FME to deliver a helpful solution. The solution accurately identified parameters, automated data shifting, and flagged records which didn’t pass strict acceptance criteria. As a result, the council saved time and money. In addition, they ensured that their data was at a suitable standard for future use.

  1. Environment Agency map asset and risk relationship

The Environment Agency needed to better understand the relationship between its assets, activities, and various at-risk species. It needed to do this in order to improve how to protect them.

Data was stored across different databases, meaning that the organisation had to rely on manual look-ups. This process was costly and unstable. The solution handled multiple input datasets and automatically correlated relationships. Following this, the data was then integrated into the client’s pre-existing data management workflows.
